I wanted to modify the existing boot screen for Xubuntu. I did not care to create my own, only wanted to make changes to a couple of the graphic files. Change the logo and change the background color. This little tutorial worked out very nicely for me.

You will need to be root to edit the file. A very useful approach is to user leafpad or gedit from running the file manager as root. I personally prefer gedit so I removed leafpad and install gedit on my installation.
